Animal Spirit Guides

I've always been a big follower of animals as spirit guides. I got into this concept shortly after my brother was killed and crows kept showing up. They still do, I'm pretty sure they are my spirit animal. I think before that it was a dragonfly, but i'm pretty sure that it changes as our lives do. I'm really not sure where this post is going at the moment. I just wanted to share how excited I am about getting Jessica Swift's Animal Allies oracle card deck. Not only are these sooo pretty, the artwork is just amazing, but there is also an explanation about each animal and its meaning and symbolism.

I also got a crow print with my deck, and can't wait to frame it and hang it up in my studio!  These will make some pretty awesome gifts! (this is not an affiliate link, and i'm just posting this because it's all love) :)

One Big Detour

“Often what may appear as a detour in life, is actually the most direct and empowering path to your destination.” - James Arthur Ray

Yes, it has been slightly over a year since I last posted anything around here, and yes, I’m aware no one probably even noticed. It is ok though, blogging is so ten years ago! That doesn’t mean I’m stopping anytime soon, I am just getting back on this wagon and into this space again. I am overwhelmed with all the ideas waiting to get out and into this world. With that said, I’m finally back in a good headspace, and finding my footing in this life as a Mama to two amazing little people! It means i’ve found more time to create the art I love, work on my business, and still have plenty of time leftover to nurture and love my family. The ebb and flow of finding this new normal has been a long and winding detour. I’m technically back to exactly where I left things years ago, but yet completely changed and ready to take things in a new direction.

Speaking of new directions, a little sneak peek at something I am bringing back in  a new and more meaningful way. Hopefuls will be coming back soon!  The Hopeful above I made in 2013, and I can’t wait to bring these little ladies back to life!

What is something you can bring back in a new way in your life?

Around Here Lately

It has been a real struggle to make time for everything lately. Being 29 weeks pregnant and running out of energy on an almost daily basis hasn't left too much time for art making. I've been squeezing it in when I can though. Wish I had more to share here on my blog, but for now i'm going with the flow. I think it is completely reasonable to not expect too much at this time. I've been keeping up with my monthly desktop wallpapers, you can get access to them through my mailing list here. August2560x1440

I've also been in the studio making art whenever I have some free time. It felt really good to dive back into paints again, and start a new painting. I've always been drawn to elephants, and love to add them to my work. Was bummed when I went to the zoo last weekend and they had no elephants!

I'm also playing in my sketchbook a lot lately, and working out some new styles and ways of creating illustrations. I'm looking forward to working on some of my big ideas in 2017, and can't wait to share what I've been thinking up with you! Hoping that getting on a schedule with a toddler and baby won't be too hard, and that by January I'll be able to get myself back to the studio slowly but surely!

Drawing 101

New art has been slow in coming around here lately, but not for a lack of art being made. I've been super busy working on some new things, and haven't felt like sharing just yet. A little something to look forward too, and I do plan on sharing soon. I thought since it's been awhile since I've shared anything here that I would pop in and tell you a little story and some art. Back in my last year of college I finally got around to taking the art classes I needed to graduate. This included painting, drawing, and photography. I took these along with my final classes I needed for my Graphic Design BA. It was when I started diving into these finer art classes that a part of me sort of woke up. This was where I actually started to think that art was my thing, and even though graphic design is art, there was something I couldn't shake about actually creating things with brushes, pens, and ink.  It is why I'm working towards figuring out what type of illustration technique is my jive.

I had an amazing drawing teacher, and I was lucky enough to stumble into a painting class taught by him a few years after I graduated as well. His style of teaching and letting us find our lines, and being open to the looseness that is art, was what i've always chased after with my own art. I think some of my best work at the time came out of that class. These are just a few of the charcoal and ink drawings that I did back then. Hard to believe it's been more than a decade.

Playtime

bird illustration girl with umbrella I've been a bit quiet around here lately, as I've been working playing in my studio a ton! I'm trying to nail down my style, and really pull together a cohesive portfolio, all in the name of getting some freelance illustration work. Yup, you read that right, I'm working towards that goal that I set for myself some ten long years ago. It was what started me down the path of art, and though I have been all over the map my love for creating illustrations hasn't wavered. The original drive is still there, and I thought it is about time to make this happen already.
